COTTON PRICES RULE HIGH DESPITE OGL, COMFORTABLE SUPPLY

Article Abstract:

The domestic prices of cotton have been ruling high even at a time when duty-free imports have been permitted under open government license and the supply position is comfortable. The All India Cotton Trade Associations estimate domestic cotton production of 165.50 lakh bales of 170 kg each during the 1998-99 season against 158 lakh bales in the 1997-98 season. The textile industry is also witnessing a severe liquidity crunch as the trade has not yet got a large amount of funds from the mills against supplies of cotton. (khr)

8% INCREASE SEEN IN AREA UNDER COTTON

Article Abstract:

India is likely to increase the area under cotton crop cultivation by eight percent during 1998-99 season as farmers have earned high prices for their product in 1997-98 season. Area under cotton cultivation was 8.87 million hectares in 1997- 98. The output of cotton has come down to 15.33 million bales in 1997-98 (17.79 million bales). The drop in production was due to unseasonal rains and an attack of leaf curl virus. (gs)
