ASEAN moves closer to free trade

Article Abstract:

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have entered into an agreement to abolish most tariffs by 2010 instead of 2015 as initially proposed. The ASEAM is comprised of the Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia and Myanmar. Meanwhile, foreigners are now allowed to own retail businesses in the Philippines after a new law was passed in December 1999. In Japan, on the other hand, a new 'easy declaration system' will be introduced, thus substantially reducing the costs and time needed for importing.
