AUSTRIA: CITIZENS WANT E-GOVERNMENT

Article Abstract:

According to a poll conducted by Unisys in cooperation with the Vienna Economics University, 46% of Austrians want to use the internet for communication with the public authorities, while currently 3% are doing so. 40% want to use the telephone, 13% the post, 8% fax, 4% info terminals and 1% WAP phones and SMS. The Wirtschaftskammer reports that 63% of companies want to use internet for communication with the authorities. According to the government's plans, this will be possible from the end of 2002 at the latest.

Siemens beendet Kabelfertigung

Article Abstract:

Siemens is to close the production of telecom cables in Floridsdorf, Vienna. Pirelli will continue to make power cables at the plant with 300 of the 600 staff. Altogether the closing of the telecom cable production will involve 100 redundancies. Pirelli has an option until mid-October 1998 to take over the cable plant in Bratislava . It is also taking over MKM in Budapest, while another Hungarian plant, in Szeged, is being closed.
