AUSTRIA: CONCENTRATION IN MEAT SECTOR

Article Abstract:

The Weiser company might become part of the Markenfleischer GesmbH meat group set up by Mr Anton Stumpf in Austria. Stumpf, which took over the Salzburg-based meat company Stefanitsch, is planning to build up within a few months a group with an annual turnover of Sch 2.5bn. Weiser has announced that it may have to file for composition. Due to the crisis in the meat market, the company has seen a 25% fall in turnover. If the company fails, it will be the first victim of the BSE crisis. There is also speculation about Weiser becoming a partner from the US.

AUSTRIA: ANOTHER SLAUGHTERHOUSE BANKRUPT

Article Abstract:

In Austria, bankruptcy proceedings have been initiated for the Weiz-based slaughterhouse Loidl. This follows the failure of the associated companies Karl Kern and Premium HandelsgesmbH. With 136 staff, Loidl generated annual turnovers of Sch 250mn to 300mn. Its main clients included Adeg, Hofer and Lowa.

Following the failure of Graz-based meat processing firm Karl Kern, an associated company, Premium Fleischwarenhandels GmbH has filed for bankruptcy. The company with 18 staff generated a turnover of about Sch 250mn in year 2000. The main client was the supermarket chain Metro. Premium Fleischwarenhandels is the be closed.
