AUSTRIA/ITALY: DEUTSCHE TELEKOM'S TAKEOVER PLANS

Article Abstract:

"Sources close to Telekom Austria" suggest that Deutsche Telekom is interested in taking a majority stake in Austria's former telecoms monopoly. The state-controlled company, in which Telecom Italia holds a 25% plus one share stake, is to be launched on the stock exchange. Telekom Austria's director general Werner Kasztler says that also alternatives to a stock exchange launch are being considered. There is also speculation about Olivetti, which beat Deutsche Telekom in the battle for Telecom Italia, being the next takeover candidate. Deutsche Telekom could be a likely buyer. The acquisition of Mannesmann by Vodafone has added pressure on Deutsche Telekom.
