AUSTRIA: DEPOSIT ON DISPOSABLE BEVERAGE CANS/BOTTLES?

Article Abstract:

Vienna's town councilor for the environment, Isabella Kossina has called on the Austrian minister for the environment, Wilhelm Molterer to introduce a deposit of Sch 7 on all single-trip beverage packaging. A poll showed that 80% of the interviewed were in favour of a deposit on drink cans and plastic bottles. The highest rates of acceptance were found for beer, mineral water and wine; a deposit on containers for milk and milk-based drinks was the least acceptable to those polled. Moreover, Isabella Kossina filed a suit with the Constitutional Court against the reduction of multi-trip quotas according to the Austrian waste management law. This quota reduction prevented the introduction of a compulsory deposit on disposable packaging with too low recycling quotas.

AUSTRIA: MORE PACKAGING WASTE COLLECTED

Article Abstract:

ARGEV Verpackungsverwertungsgesellschaft, which is responsible for the collection of packaging waste in Austria, collected 169,000 t of plastic packaging in 1999, up 6.8% over the previous year. About 50% of domestic and 20% of industrial plastic waste was incinerated. Due to the increase in volume, ARGEV's profit on ordinary activities totalled Sch 296mn in 1999, which enables a further reduction of licence fees. The company's income under licence agreements grew by 11% to Sch 1.68bn. ARGEV expects the volume of waste collected to increase by another 10% in 2000.

AUSTRIA: ARA FACING ANOTHER LAWSUIT

Article Abstract:

ARA , which is responsible for the collection and recycling of packaging waste in Austria, has been taken to the Constitutional Court by Arbeiterkammer. ARA is already faced with lawsuits in the European Court and the Cartel Court. Arbeiterkammer suspects cross-subsidising within ARA, as up to 50% of plastic packaging producers benefit the collection system without paying the relevant fees. The organisation that represents Austrian employees and consumers demands that ARA makes its fee calculation criteria public.
