AUSTRIA: STATE TO RAISE MONEY BY SELLING FORESTS

Article Abstract:

Osterreichische Bundesforste (OBf), the Austrian state-owned forestry company is to sell between 30,000 and 50,000 hectares of forest (more than 10% of its commercial forests) in order to meet its contribution of Sch 3bn to the government's budget in 2001 and 2002. As the divestments are likely to take 5-10 years, the Bundesforste will have to resort to credits for interim financing the contribution. In return for the forests to be given up, the government will pass on to the Bundesforste the management of some more lakes.
