AUSTRIA: LAFARGE-PERLMOOSER ON CEMENT MARKET

Article Abstract:

Martin Kriegner, director general of Lafarge-Perlmooser, predicts the Austrian cement market to remain unchanged in year 2000. In 1999 cement consumption declined 4% to 4.8mn tonnes, largely due to the slump in residential construction market. About 25% of cement produced in Austria is used in residential construction, where it is gaining ground from bricks. Austria's imports from eastern Europe declined slightly and account for just under 20% . Prices are on the increase. Mr Kriegner does not expect further closures of cement factories in Austria, as capacity utilisation is satisfactory. Lafarge-Perlmooser wants to raise its minority stakes in two cement mills in Slovakia and Slovenia into majority holdings.
