AUSTRIA: MAX.MOBIL WANTS PHOTO CHAIN NIEDERMAYER

Article Abstract:

Austrian mobile telephony operator max.mobil Telekommunikation Service GmbH, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, wants to take over its distribution partner, Fotohandel Helmut Niedermeyer AG via Christian Niedermeyer Verwaltungs-GmbH. The photo chain has 120 shops and generated an operating profit of Sch 89.1mn on a turnover of Sch 2,9bn in 1998. Almost all Niedermeyer outlets have shops-in-shops for max.mobil. Max.mobil wanted to intensify the alliance in anticipation of its plans to enter the fixed-line telephony market and, probably in autumn 1999, the internet sector. Anti-trust authorities are expected to permit the deal without any problem.

AUSTRIA: ELECTRONICS IN THE UNDERGROUND

Article Abstract:

By the end of year 2000 the Vienna public transport company Wiener Linien will have installed antennae at all underground railway stations, thus allowing the use of mobile phones. The first six stations will be equipped by the end of 1999. Wiener Linien has already signed agreements with Mobilkom and Max.mobil, which operate 900-MHz networks, about usage fees. It is in talks with One concerning the latter's 1,800-MHz network. On the other hand, Wiener Linien has given up plans to play the radio programme of Radio Wien via loudspeakers at railway stations. The decision is explained with high copyright fees for music.
