AUSTRIA: ONE, ERICSSON SOLUTION FOR ROAD PRICING

Article Abstract:

In Austria, the mobile phone service provider One and the mobile phone maker Ericsson are to launch a new telematics system in autumn 2001. It is based on the global positioning system (GPS) with on-board units and mobile phones that transmit to a central computer data on the location of the vehicle. The system could serve transport companies in fleet management. On the other hand, it could provide the solution for the fully electronic road pricing system to be introduced in Austria. While Ericsson and One are betting on GPS and mobile phone, competitors such as Alcatel, Kapsch and Siemens mainly bet on microwave systems. The new technology is being tested on a 20-km motorway section near Vienna. Ericsson estimates that in the medium term the price of the on-board units might be between Sch 2,000 and Sch 3,000.
