Article Abstract:

According to the so-called Green Report presented to by the Austrian government, the revenues of organic farms in 1999 were 20% higher than those of conventional farms. In 1998 the earnings had been 14% higher. The difference is explained with higher subsidies for organic farming, higher prices for organic products, and the higher share of direct marketing. About 7% of organic farms market their products directly, compared with 0.3% of conventional farms. For each Sch 100 spent, organic farms gain revenues of Sch 153 on average. The number of organic farms in Austria is decreasing.
