AUSTRIA: SURVEY OF EATING HABITS

Article Abstract:

According to a poll by ACNielsen among 3,000 Austrians in August-September 1999, 56% of Austrians prefer traditional home cooking. Healthy and light food is the favourite of 20% of those interviewed, while 16% prefer international cuisine and 1% fast food. Among people of 14-24 years of age 4% prefer fast food. In this age group pizza is the favourite dish, followed by spaghetti and schnitzel. Among all those interviewed, schnitzel is the favourite dish of 12%. It is followed by spaghetti (9%), vegetables and fish/seafood (6% each), pizza (5%), chicken (4%), beef and pork (3% each). 67% of women and 11% of men said they cook every day. Prepared or half-prepared foods account for about 25% of meals eaten at home. The share is higher among young people.

Austria: Austrians support subsidies for farmers

Article Abstract:

Around 80% of Austrians asked in the 1, 200 sample questionnaire by the Austrian based market research institute Fessel-Gfk are against canceling compensation payments and subsidies for farmers. Presently Austrian agriculture receives around Sch 22.1mn from the European Union and public funds. The questionnaire indicates that the Austrian public is aware of the importance of agriculture.

AUSTRIA: SCHOOLS AND INTERNET

Article Abstract:

At a conference in Salzburg it was said that almost 50% of Austrian schools have internet access. No more than 10% of teachers use the internet in their free time. Although CD-ROMs and internet will gain ground, textbooks are expected to maintain a share of 80% in the learning media market.
