AUSTRIA: TELEKABEL TO EXPAND PAY-PER-VIEW

Article Abstract:

From the end of 2000/beginning of 2001 the Austrian Vienna-based cable TV provider Telekabel will be offering a so-called low-cost PC box for pay TV. The digital set-top box was developed by the US company UPC, which holds 95% of the stock of Telekabel and which in turn is owned almost 30% by Bill Gates. With the PC box, which is offered either for free or against a small deposit, the 406,000 households in Vienna connected to Telekabel's network can subscribe to 50-60 pay-per-view channels, which allow "near video on demand" (a number of films starting at 20-minute intervals on the various channels). The digital set-top box also makes it possible to offer web-TV, e-mail facility and a programme guide. Simultaneously with the launch of the new pay-per-view offerings, Telekabel will cut back the number of channels in its basic pay-TV package from more than 30 to 15-20.
