A&L, Bank end talks on merger

The Bank of Ireland PLC's and Alliance & Leicester PLC's (A&L) proposed 8 billion euro merger collapsed as both sides differed over several issues. A&L and Bank of Ireland could not agree on such topics as the location of the merged bank's base and over who would hold the deciding vote in the event of a boardroom split. A&L insiders accused Bank of Ireland of attempting to transform the deal into a direct takeover.

Banco Santander makes bid approach to Abbey National

This is Banco Santander's second time approaching Abbey National. Its first bid in February 2004 fell apart when news of discussions were leaked to the media.
