Across the divide

Article Abstract:

Asian nations, such as Hong Kong and Singapore, are anxious to form free trade blocks along the lines of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has suggested a free trade agreement amongst east Asian countries. However, a commercial pact with the US, which includes the same local-content rules as the NAFTA and also includes a clause stating that tariffs would go back to pre-agreement levels in case of an import surge, would better suit the interests of Asian nations like Hong Kong and Singapore.

How to buy funds

Article Abstract:

There are a variety of Asian funds available for investors. Investments catering to capital accumulation, lean towards equities, commodities or derivatives, whereas money-market funds or bond funds provide high income returns. Balanced funds invest in cash, bonds and equities, and umbrella fund investors can change funds at a reduced cost. 'Offshore' funds in low-tax centers such as Luxembourg, Hong Kong and Bermuda cater to international investors. Tokyo, Sydney and Hong Kong have the largest fund-management centers in the Asian time zones.

A phone call from safety?: IMF says Simex, Osaka could have saved bearings

Article Abstract:

In the aftermath of the collapse of the Barings trading house International Monetary Fund officials in Aug 1995 released a report critical of the Osaka and Singapore exchanges. Officials of Simex had asked Barings about its large position in Nikkei futures, but never checked with Osaka, a Simex rival, to confirm that Barings had offsetting positions there. The report recommends greater cooperation and information-sharing among exchanges and between them and regulators, on a global basis.
