Advanced construction materials: composites, smart materials and advanced castings are increasingly making the transition to construction, with promising results

Article Abstract:

Polymer composites, high-strength concrete, advanced casting technology and smart materials have all made promising developments in construction use of the past few years. Polymer composites could be used for main structural elements, as alternatives to steel reinforcement, for pre-stressing cables and for strengthening existing structures. High strength concrete can make concrete construction an alternative to steel frame construction of high rise buidlings. Advanced casting technology allows better choice of shape, weldability an dductility, and smart materials include informative materials which can detect change, and protective materials.
