Advertising and the competitive environment

Article Abstract:

Advertising performs a number of different functions, including disseminating information about new products, allowing consumers to familiarize themselves with products or services or reminding consumers of the intrinsic value of a product or service. Informative advertising can play a role in correcting false views about old products, and is also vital in creating basic or primary demand. Advertising boosts information and reduces search costs for consumers, and can thus assist in keeping the prices of incumbent companies lower than first thought.

The Single Market Programme and European price convergence

Article Abstract:

The issue of whether the development of the Single Market Programme (SMP) has led to a convergence in prices between European Union member states is discussed. The introduction of the SMP has encouraged a convergence of prices as would be anticipated by the 'law of one price.' Despite this, it is inevitable that a process of price convergence is incomplete.
