Adviser to Estrada may test U.S.-Philippine ties

Article Abstract:

The move by the US Department of Justice to extradite Mark Jimenez is expected to strain US-Philippine relations. Jimenez, who has managed to become one of the most influential advisers of Philippine Pres Joseph Estrada, is considered a fugitive in the US. Jimenez is being accused of 47 counts of tax evasion and mail and wire fraud in the US. Jimenez also allegedly made illegal campaign contributions to Pres Bill Clinton and other members of the Democratic Party.

Protests shadow Estrada trial

Article Abstract:

Phillipine president Joseph Estrada's impeachment trial began with demonstrations of about 50,000 people outside of the Senate building. Some demonstrators were Filipinos who still approve of him, but most, including former president Corazon Aquino, called for him to resign. Estrada, who is charged with bribery, corruption, betrayal and violation of the constitution, can be convicted and removed from office if found guilty of just one of the four charges.

Arroyo prepares for life after Estrada

Article Abstract:

Philippine Vice President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her supporters have demanded the resignation of impeached President Joseph Estrada by dawn on Saturday so that Ms. Arroyo can take over as president. Decreasing the national deficit, making it easier for investment from foreign companies, and establishing a fairer political system are among her plans.
