KLM, Alitalia to seal joint-venture pact

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Alitalia are close to reaching a joint venture agreement. The joint venture will bring about the integration of many of the carriers' main operations. The joint venture will also make it possible for Alitalia to join in the Northwest-KLM joint venture. KLM could make an investment in Alitalia when the Italian-based carrier is privatized in the year 2000.

KLM and Alitalia have reached an agreement on a joint venture that will fully integrate both carriers' international operations under single management. The joint venture agreement opens the door to a eventual merger between KLM and Alitalia. The joint venture will become effective on November 1, 1999. Both carriers' passenger and cargo operations will be merged under the deal.
