After preferences: education in California

Article Abstract:

The University of California aimed to help minority students when the university's regents voted to terminate the practice of granting preferences to minorities who want to enroll in the university. The move led to a steep decline in minority enrollment at some of the university's nine campuses. Those who support the end of preference claim the decline in minority enrollment shows how far the school system wavered to accommodate blacks and Latinos. People who support preferences claim the decline shows that discrimination still thrives. The federal government is investigating the issue.
