Air France-KLM talks with Alitalia: merger appears remote; net profit tumbles 48% after year-earlier gains

Second-quarter net profits have fallen 48% from last year at Air France KLM S.A. The airline is in merger talks with Alitalia, but there are doubts that the merger will succeed. Since Air France KLM is larger than Alitalia, there is speculation that a takeover is more likely.

Finmeccanica net profit climbed sharply in 2006

Finmeccanica S.p.A. of Italy posted a stellar net profit rise to 1.02 billion Euros ($1.36 billion) in 2006 from 396 million Euros in 2005. Revenues were increased by the 404 million Euros stock flotation of subsidiary Ansaldo STS SpA also of Italy.

Finmeccanica's profit falls 32%
