Air fresheners

Article Abstract:

A review of the European retail market for air fresheners and insecticides from 1993 to 1997 reveals that air fresheners dominate five of the six major markets in Europe with the UK getting the highest share of 84%. The insecticides sector dominated in Spain with 58.4 % of value sales in 1997. Environmentally friendly products such as scented candles and pot-pourris are grabbing sales of air fresheners and insecticides but air fresheners with long-lasting fragrances are gaining market share. SC Johnson and Sons dominate the market while multiple retail groceries are the leading major distributors of air fresheners.

A number of trends characterize Spain's air freshener and insecticide industry. These markets had total sales of 53.3 million units or 16,504 million pesetas in 1993. However, poor weather and economic recession also reduced demand by 0.2% between 1989 to 1993. Electric dispenser insecticides and continuous release air fresheners have the largest market shares at 32.5% and 77%, respectively. Backgrounds on major manufacturers are presented.
