Alcatel disclosure raises fears for entire sector

Article Abstract:

Alcatel SA's announcement that it would fall short on operating-profit forecasts for 1998 by 1.5 billion francs, or $263.6 million, has raised concerns about the performance of other equipment makers. The shortcoming was attributed to the cancellation of equipment orders from major telephone firms and the intensifying economic crises in Russia and southeast Asia. The biggest problem confronting Alcatel and other equipment makers is the reduction or delay in infrastructure investments of European telephone operators amid growing competition and uncertainties in Asia and Russia. Alcatel is particularly affected due to cancelled orders from Deutsche Telekom AG. A spokeswoman for Alcatel, however, said that the company still anticipates to post two-digit growth in 1998 for its transmission, submarine and corporate-network businesses.
