Alcatel expects tough times to linger through next year

French telecommunications-equipment company Alcatel S.A. forecast an operating-profit shortfall for 2001, announced 10,000 new layoffs in Europe, and cast doubt on any market pickup before the end of the year.

Alcatel's profit is expected to fall

Article Abstract:

Alcatel SA is expecting to post a decline in its profits for the first-half of 1999. Analysts said that this was not important as was Alcatel's long-term telecommunications operation strategy. The French-based company is expected to report a 15% decline in its profits. During the same period in 1998, Alcatel posted 2.3 billion French francs (350.6 million euros).

Alcatel first-half profit fell 21% on increased research spending

Article Abstract:

Alcatel SA posted a decline of 21% in its operating profits for the 1999 first-half. The company, as a result of higher research expenditures, posted 311 million euros in operating profits for the period.
