Alitalia swings to a slim profit

Alitalia Linee Aeree Italiane S.p.A. of Italy posted a net profit in the third quarter of 5 million Euros compared with a net loss of 46 million Euros a year earlier. Ryanair Holdings PLC of Ireland posted a second quarter 17 percent net profit rise of 172.5 million Euros compared with 148.1 million Euros a year earlier. European airlines appear to be pulling out of a downturn.

Alitalia's loss narrows in first half: carrier sees flying at least for a year amid buyer search

Article Abstract:

First-half net loss for Italian airline Alitalia Linee Aeree Italiane S.p.A. totaled $292.1 mil, with revenue rising by 3.1 percent and operating costs increasing 3%. Fuel costs dropped 1.5%, but personnel expenses rose 14%. Airline officials stated the firm has sufficient cash reserves to continue flying for at least a year while a buyer is sought.

Ryanair earnings fell 21% in period as fuel costs rose

Ryanair Holdings PLC of Ireland posted a 21 percent fall in net earnings to 36.82 million Euros ($44.3 million) in the 3rd quarter. Sales rose 27 percent to 370.7 million Euros.
