Article Abstract:

Russia has a trade surplus and has improved its economic growth, yet has a provisional agreement to reschedule debt from the Soviet era, and aims to reschedule additional debt. Commercial banks are relieved that they have achieved a settlement, while hedge funds have seen a doubling in the price of debt that they have bought. Germany is concerned that other countries are happy to accept write-offs, though they are not owed as much as Germany is. Ukraine has less weight than Russia, and does not plan debt write-offs.

The waiting game

Article Abstract:

Russia has obtained a debt renewal which has been granted by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Russia is not seen as likely to repay all its debt but some creditors are reluctant to admit this. The US and other smaller creditors are keener to write off the debt compared with larger creditors such as Germany. Russia is also faced with debts from the former Soviet Union which could be dealt with by trading it as if it were Russian eurobonds.
