Amalis Rodrigues was a singer who developed the fado form of singing, which is a melancholy form that developed in Portugal, and is also popular in Brazil. She was popular at the time of the dictatorship in Portugal, and fell from popularity after the dictatorship ended, and more optimistic music became fashionable. She remained popular in Brazil, and her music was seen as similar to the blues in the US. Portuguese fashion has again moved toward her type of melancholy music in the 1990s.

His father is from a family from Alexandria, Egypt, and Thomas Ades was born in London, England. He has written an opera based on a Duchess's life, and this includes a scene which has shocked some critics who argue that the Duchess is attacked in a particular scene relating to her divorce. He uses dissonance in his music, though it is not atonal.
