Ambivalent campaign: praise of Vietnam is mixed with fear of possible explosion

Article Abstract:

Foreign observers praise Vietnam's government for its effort to inform the Vietnamese people about the dangers of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (Aids) but also fear that the preventive measures chosen may be inadequate or misdirected. The failure of the government's campaign to dispel the popular idea that Aids can only be caught from foreigners is particularly worrisome. Official underreporting of the number of Aids cases is another danger. At present, the government will admit to only 549 cases of HIV, the virus that causes Aids.

Comforting noises

Article Abstract:

Talks between US Secretary of State Warren Christopher and Chinese Foreign Minister Qian Qichen at the Asean Regional Forum meeting on Aug 1, 1995, have led to promising signs. The two countries' relations have deteriorated in recent months, with China now angry over the US's decision to let Taiwan's president visit unofficially, and Washington annoyed at Beijing's detention of US human-rights activist Harry Wu. The two officials agreed to further talks, and Beijing said it would apply intl law in the Spratly Islands dispute.
