Article Abstract:

Acer, a Taiwanese computer company, has designed a new chip that will allow personal computers to approach the performance of mid-range and even mainframe computers. Acer has signed two deals concerning this chip: with NEC, a Japanese semiconductor firm, to produce it; and with Microsoft, a US software manufacturer, to use it in Microsoft's Windows New Technology (Windows NT) operating system. Acer America's Ronald Chwang and Microsoft's Bill Gates believe the chip will bring Windows NT into common use.
