An optimal tree search method for the manufacturing systems cell formation problem

Article Abstract:

A new method for formulating efficient solutions to Cell Formation Problems in Group Technology was presented as an improvement over existing methods based on clustering theory which are constrained by their weakness in formulating exact solutions. The new approach utilizes both the Gilmore-Lawler bound for the Quadratic Assignment Problem and the Rendl-Wolkowicz bound for the Quadratic Transportation Problem. Results show the new method to be an efficient procedure in formulating optimal solutions at low computational cost.

Integrated procurement-production systems: a review

Article Abstract:

A review of the literature on integrated procurement-production (IPP) systems includes Joint Replenishment Policy models and algorithmic issues, among others. Overall, the research on IPP systems still remains at a minimum level. Studies should focus on the practical applications of IPP systems due to its potential to provide challenging problems for research in terms of managin total flow of goods from procurement of raw materials to delivery of finished products to the consumer.
