An original way with a copier

Article Abstract:

As Managing Director of the photocopying company Rank Xerox since 1989, Bernard Fournier has worked towards changing the organisational structure of the company into self contained groups. The approach has proved profitable, with returns of 616 million pounds sterling in 1995. Fournier advocates an open space working environment which he finds very productive in encouraging team co-operation and interaction. His operation is geared to maintaining customer and worker satisfaction both of which have improved since Fournier took over the management of the company.

The company has developed innovative technology for flat panel liquid crystal display screens, and it is developing low-priced, colour bubble-jet printers for both home and the desktop. The company's management structure comprises Mitarai, two executive vice presidents, a chairman and vice-chairman.

The company's strategy has been to purchase several smaller companies, consolidating the administrative functions into a central location.
