Anatomy of a shakeup: injecting Intelsat with a sense of business reality

Article Abstract:

In June 1983, Richard Colino became the chief executive of INTELSAT (International Telecommunications Satellite Organization), an international organization headquartered in Washington, D.C. that controls 16 satellites, two-thirds of the worlds international telephone links, and 98 percent of intercontinental and transoceanic television. At that time INTELSAT had assets of close to $2 billion. Colino describes the bureaucratic operations of INTELSAT when he took over, and his programs for more clearly assigning management responsibilities, improving communication within the organization, and fostering a 'corporate culture'.

A hire sense of purpose

Article Abstract:

Being flexible is a vital element in successful career progress, according to Frances Cook, managing director of outplacement concern Sanders and Sidney and a director of Penna Holdings, parent company of Sanders and Sidney. It is becoming increasingly common for people to experience several redundancies, and this is prompting many to consider self-employment. Cook plays an important role in assessing whether executives who have recently been made redundant are ready to take a completely new career direction.
