Angela Merkel, Germany's new-look conservative

Article Abstract:

Angela Merkel looks set to become leader of Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in April 2000, with the choice likely to be ratified at the party's congress starting from April 9. She is tough and tenacious and unconcerned about glamor. She has been courageous in calling for a break with the party's past and is cool under pressure. There are still questions as to whether she can help the CDU to recover, and she lacks experience. She lacks vision and originality, and may become less popular as she loses novelty value. She should be an asset over the short term due to her directness and lack of jargon.

Kinder, Kuche, CDU?

Article Abstract:

Angela Merkel may become leader of the German Christian Democratic Union (CDU). The leadership of the CDU, and the Christian Social Union, a sister party, have reservations because Merkel is a woman from eastern Germany. omen are well represented in parliament in Germany, but account for few top civil service, university and management jobs. There was a conservative backlash during the 1980s and 1990s, and the propotion of women in paid work has risen slowly, and has even dropped in eastern Germany since 1990. This is partly due to difficulties experienced by mothers in paid work.
