Anxious Hong Kong residents place their bets as search is launched for post-Patten leader

Article Abstract:

The citizens and expatriates in Hong Kong are anxiously awaiting who will be selected as the new governor of the colony. They view this appointment as an indicator of whether China will fulfill its promise of maintaining open society in Hong Kong and its position as a global business center after the territory is surrendered to Chinese rule in 1997. Candidates for the post, which will be called chief executive after the hand-over, include shipping tycoon C.H. Tung and Hong Kong Chief Secretary Anson Chan.

China puts down the welcome mat for Hong Kong's selection committee

Article Abstract:

The Chinese government is making an effort to win over Hong Kong residents to its concept of a Selection Committee, a 400-member body that will choose the colony's leaders after the British departure in 1997. Many still remain wary of China's methods and motives but 1,500 individuals have already applied for membership in the planned committee, among them civil servants in Hong Kong's colonial government.

Hong Kong strikes out on its own: government proposes measure to protect political freedoms after July

Article Abstract:

China has rejected the UK administration's proposed legal amendments designed to protect political freedoms of Hong Kong residents. The anti-subversion amendment aims to prevent the prosecution of Hong Kong's people for expressing their political views. China, which takes over the colony on July 1, 1997, contends that the UK broke its promise to consult on key issues during the transition period.
