Approaching a tight bend

Article Abstract:

Car manufacturers are beginning to acknowledge that they will face very challenging business conditions in Europe in the near future. Sales of new cars in Europe are set to decline in 1999, and sales will have slumped by around 10% from their present level by 2001, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit. The decline in sales will be particularly severe in the upper-medium sector of the market. However, small cars will also be affected, with sales in this sector falling by up to 9% by 2001.

Britain's Bavarian bulldog

Article Abstract:

BMW grew from the Bavarian Aircraft Works set up in 1916. The company then became Bayerische Motoren Werke. Despite its history, BMW has the air of a young company which has achieved success in a competitive industry where many companies have failed. The acquisition of Rover in the UK involves risk but also offers the opportunity of boosting production. BMW emphasises training and its annual training budget rivals that of small universities at some 50 million pounds sterling invested annually.

Motormorphosis

Article Abstract:

European car manufacturers will probably never really cooperate closely, as they are important symbols of individual national identity. However, there have been significant developments among component suppliers, with many now forced to merge or to sell off some operations. Component suppliers are focusing either on becoming very large, or on establishing a leading position in a niche sector. They must all align themselves with new ways of doing business among car manufacturers.
