Latin America

Article Abstract:

Latin America has seen weak growth on the whole, and interest costs were hit by the crisis in emerging markets in fall 1998, while external funding was also reduced. Brazil may only be affected by a shallow recession, while Argentina may fare worse than official estimates. Colombia has devalued the peso and has been hit by a severe recession. Mexico has been aided by US economic growth and has also been helped by support from the International Monetary Fund.

Asia

Article Abstract:

There are signs that economic recovery is beginning to become established in Asia, although the rate of recovery will differ from country to country. The main driving force behind Asia's economic recovery has been the relaxation of monetary and fiscal policies. However, there has also been a rise in export demand, particularly for electronics products. Export competitiveness will be assisted by a more favourable domestic inflationary and labour climate.
