Article Abstract:

There are a number of projects in Asia to wire up countries such as the multimedia super corridor in Malaysia are the 'wired island' project in Singapore. Electronic commerce and the Internet are growing more rapidly in Asia than in the US, despite the economic crisis that Asia has suffered. Online users are more likely to be in business in Asia than they are in the US. Small and medium firms play an important role in Asian economies, and they have much to gain from using the Internet for international marketing.

Article Abstract:

The Chinese government aims to benefit from the Internet, but is concerned about losing a monopoly on news and information. Initially there were restrictions on access to foreign computer networks, but such restrictions have become more difficult to impose. The China Wide Web has since been developed by the central telecoms authority and state-run newsagency, and uses news from western agencies, excluding controversial issues. Electronic commerce is limited in China since there are few holders of credit cards.
