Asian container carriers battle lower yields

Article Abstract:

Asian containerships are battling overcapacity and spiraling freight rates brought about by the continued acquisition of ships and the inequity of rates in the East-West trade. Shipping companies continue to consolidate the industry and streamline operations to maintain profitability but these activities have done little to cut losses. Alliances and rate increases also do little than offer short-term solutions to the problem.

Hierarchical resource planning for shipping companies

Article Abstract:

The merchant fleet resource management problem is analyzed in terms of decisions on the purchase and use of vessels and the satisfaction of customer demands. It is shown that shipping lines can increase their profits despite the highly-competitive market by optimizing their asset acquisition and utilization strategies. A hierarchical model for maximizing company profits is presented.
