Asian economies escape worst of tsunami

Article Abstract:

The economic impact of the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia is examined. While economists predict that the natural disaster will reduce the economic growth of the regions hardest hit by at worst only a few tenths of a percentage point, they do acknowledge that the potential for outbreaks of diseases in the wake of the disaster could lead to greater economic costs.

Indonesia consumer energy prices are highly subsidized and the country is feeling the effects of high oil prices. Decreasing stock markets and the Rupiah are being shored up by sharply raised interest rates.
