Asian invasion; Hong Kong retailers lead the charge into Japan

Article Abstract:

Women's apparel marketed by Hong Kong retailers is popular with Japanese consumers who are attracted by styling and value. A number of Hong Kong firms are opening up stores in Japan, hoping to capitalize on this popularity. Japanese department store Tobu began selling Hong Kong brands in 1993 including clothes manufactured by Toppy International under the Episode, Jessica, Color 18 and Excursion labels. These clothes sell for 50% less than New York brands like DKNY and have posted sales growth of up to 20% annually.

Planting ideas: Japanese farmers specialize to beat the free market

Article Abstract:

Japanese farmers faced with a crisis in the industry are spurning the government's solution of large-scale, US-style farming in favor of tailored marketing and niche production. A dearth of subsidies and lower tariffs that invite a flood of foreign competition have led to computer management of farm groups, Internet-based sales to retailers and individual households, and the mass production of formerly rare and expensive mushrooms. More than 100 organic farming groups thrive on fears regarding foreign produce.

Shaken up

Article Abstract:

Japan's 'shaken' car inspection has long been at the center of an expensive racket in which govt-certified garages, many affiliated with parts makers, pre-inspect cars and determine what parts must be replaced. This often costs more than 100,000 yen, and upwards of 500,000 for foreign cars, most of it for parts that often prove unnecessary. The Ministry of Transport is dropping the pre-inspection requirement, but the US still wants greater access to Japan's 6.2 trillion yen parts market.
