AstraZeneca gets close to end of auction of unit

Article Abstract:

The specialty chemicals unit of AstraZeneca, which is on the auction block, has received bids of approximately $2.1 billion from Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and Co. and a joint acquisition offer from Cinven Group Ltd. and Investcorp. The global chemicals industry has experience a recent succession of restructuring deals as pharmaceutical and chemical giants sell off less profitable units.

Novartis AG emerges as suitor for Monsanto

Article Abstract:

Nothing is official, but Novartis appears to be interested in Monsanto, possibly to acquire the seed business Monsanto was able to acquire first. Novartis' loss of its bid for American Home Products to Warner-Lambert contributes to its desire to acquire Monsanto. The hurdles for such a deal involve finacial ones and antitrust issues.

Abbott Will Acquire BASF's Knoll Unit

Article Abstract:

Knoll Pharmaceutical Co. will be acquired for $6.9 billion in cash by Abbott Laboratories. Knoll, which is a division of Germany's BASF AG, is expected to assist Abbott's drug research efforts.
