At your service: Singapore Airlines stays aloft as no. 1

Article Abstract:

Singapore Airlines held onto its top position among Singapore's corporate leaders in Far Eastern Economic Review's 1996 annual REVIEW 200 rankings, but the list otherwise saw extensive shifting. The city-state's four largest banks all made the top-10 list for overall leaders, three of them rising one spot each to No 2, 3, and 4. Singapore Telecom slid from second to fifth amid concerns about its highprice-earning ratio and its overseas investments. On Jan 1, 1996, Singapore will be officially declared a developed nation, with $22,400 in per-capita income.

Holding pattern: Tata, Singapore Airlines venture awaits clearance

Article Abstract:

The attempt by India's Tata group and Singapore Airlines to form a new airline in India remains in limbo thanks to resistance by other airlines and obstruction by opposition politician Pramod Mahajan. Singapore enjoys good relations with India and the Tatas are the country's biggest industrial group, but opponents say letting Singapore in, even as a minority shareholder, threatens the rest of the industry. Ironically, Indian Airlines, with perhaps the most to lose, says it welcomes the competition.

Competition in sight

Article Abstract:

More aviation services will operate competitively in China as Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa lead the way in new cargo-handling, catering, and other ground-support operations. The central govt is also encouraging foreign investment and increased competition in a bid to raise efficiency and standards closer to international levels. Air China, China Southern, and China Eastern have also joined IATA, the major international assn of carriers. This will ease ticket sales and improve agent training.
