Collision course

Article Abstract:

US Republican leaders in Congress have been eager to sit on domestic rather than foreign affairs committees but remain fierce critics of the Clinton administration's overseas ventures. Senators Dole, Snowe, McConnell, Helms, and Murkowski, and Representatives Gingrich and Bereuter will be among those with the most powerful voices. They are likely to be hard on Communist nations in Asia, especially North Korea, and are vocal friends of Taiwan and Tibet. President Clinton can expect more conflict from the new Republican leaders.

Travelling salesmen: Commerce Secretary touts U.S. wares in India

Article Abstract:

US officials and its Export-Import Bank are aggressively helping US companies sell their goods and services overseas under President Clinton's administration. Commerce Secretary Ronald Brown plans a Jan 14 visit to India, when financing for many pending deals is expected to be worked out. The US is India's largest investor, trading partner, and technology source. Critics in Congress and elsewhere, however, contend that US firms can sell themselves, and that paying other countries to buy US goods is foolish.
