Governments of the European Union are misusing their `Golden Shares' veto power to block the transactions of private companies. In this way, these governments can retain control and protect the interests of local businesses.

Telecom Italia toils to salvage merger

Article Abstract:

The endangered merger pact between Deutsche Telekom AG and Telecom Italia SpA, which is foundering due to political squabbling between the German and Italian governments over the terms of the merger, may be rescued if Deutsche Telekom increases its bid value. Telecom Italia, which is intent on resisting a $64 billion hostile takeover attempt by Olivetti SpA, may back a leveraged recapitalization by a shell firm.
