Australia seeks reduction of U.S. subsidies in Asia

Article Abstract:

Australia is asking the US to reduce the amount of farm subsidies it provides to Asian countries to promote free competition in the region. US Agriculture Sec. Dan Glickman assured the Australian government that Congress intends to reduce foreign agricultural subsidies contained in the 1995 farm bill. Moreover, the US government, in response to Australia's criticisms against the US Dairy Export Incentive Program, stressed the the program was directed at European-subsidized products and not at Australia's unsubsidized exports.

U.S. defends sale of F-16s to Indonesia, but still seeks regard for rights issues

Article Abstract:

The Clinton administration has justified the sale of F-16 fighter aircraft to Indonesia by saying that it was in the interest of the US to help meet Indonesia's legitimate defense needs. In testimony before a Senate panel, administration officials also stressed that the sale was only a modest augmentation to Indonesia's existing fighter aircraft inventory and that it would not unduly affect the balance of power in the region.
