Australia's stock market stands out among the crowd

Article Abstract:

The remarkable performance of the Australian stock market has been the result of a healthy economy, a two percent inflation rate and the adoption of American-style restructuring by Australian firms. Australian firms such as Qantas Airways, Woodside Petroleum and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia have posted gains in their profit margins in 1998. Despite signs that the growth is slowing down, analysts are optimistic that the Reserve Bank of Australia will lower interest rates before 1999 ends which will result in more money being lent by banks to fuel the economy.

Japan's bond rally continues

Article Abstract:

The government-bond market of Japan is sustaining its rally although some investors speculate that the run could not be prolonged. Economists meanwhile are still bullish about the securities market considering that Japan's economy is experiencing its worst recession in decades. With the uncharacteristic instability of the once robust Japanese economy, investors are buying out government securities. During the third week of August 1998, yields on government bonds fell to 1.105% as bond prices went up.
