Austria: Information about customers with Avatar
Article Abstract:
The Austrian based software producer Sysis developed a virtual agent (Avatar), which serves as an electronic device to advise consumers and at the same time find out information about consumer profiles. Sysis is about to launch the "Xmas-Agent" together with Jet2web. The virtual agent helps Internet-users to choose the ideal Christmas present for friends or family by asking questions. By answering the questions information about the consumer is being stored. In this way consumer behaviour, trends and spending capacity can be made available for businesses. Sysis emerged from the Insitute for system simulation of socio-economic processes and is also involved in the Internet games and entertainment business. The new subsidiary Sysis wireless develops games for UMTS, the third generation of mobile telephones, and SMS games. The turnover is prognosed to rise from EUR 1,2mn up to EUR 2,5mn to EUR 3mn for the year 2001. From 2002 on the company hopes for the first positive operating results. Offices in New York have been closed after a recession on the games market, where Sysis had a successful system similar to the "Xmas-Agent" in use, and in Austria staff has been reduced by 20 to 45 employees in order to concentrate the expansion onto Germany and the UK.

A German-Italian company called Battery Innovation Group GmbH (BIG) is to start production of batteries in Feistritz, Austria. The battery maker Baren Batterie closed production in Feistritz in 1998.
