Austria: KirchMedia on private television market

Article Abstract:

Jan Mojto, managing director of KirchMedia GmbH, estimates that in 3 to 5 years a private national TV station might gain a market share of 5% to 10% in Austria. He puts the minimum size of a market for viable private television at 10mn inhabitants, which is not quite reached in Austria. He estimates, however, that in the medium term advertising revenues in the private TV broadcasting market might reach Sch 1bn per year. The German Kirch group is to decide in October 2001 whether to apply for a TV licence in Austria. He said that Kirch is not interested in merely regional licences. The closing date for applications is 7 November 2001.
