Awards celebrate the best in precast concrete

Article Abstract:

The International Bureau for Precast Concrete Awards 1999 gave a special award to the tunnel linking the Great Belt, Denmark, made by precast contractor A/SStorebaeltsforbindelsen. The outstanding architectural project was awarded to precast contractor Geofin SpA who built the Gilmar clothing factory. The outstanding technical project prize went to a bicycle and pedestrian bridge in Italy built by Cav Nico Veli and FLLI. Several concrete structures received an honourable mention in the award ceremony, such as the street furniture in Porticco, Corsica.

There is a need for clarity and empathy in relations between architects and artists, according to architect Derek Latham, founder of Derek Latham Co. His practice has become known for frequently going against widely-held views about what is required for a successful architectural practice. He is willing to look critically at a brief and make amendments to it if necessary, and does not compete on the basis of price. He is also opposed to having a distinctive house style.
