Ayodhya backlash: the BJP plans to force early elections

Article Abstract:

An agitation campaign to force Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao's Congress party into an early general election has been initiated by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The impetus behind this move was the demolition of the long-disputed Ayodhya mosque. The political situation becomes more acute with the perceived factional disputes within the Congress. The BJP aims at further crippling government efforts by attacking budgetary measures while trying to gain credit for the Ayodhya issue.
